Introduction - CompressedThere is a trail in Northeast Minnesota called the Superior Hiking Trail.  Its 310 miles long starting at the border of Canada and terminating in Duluth.  Inspiration for building the trail came from the more widely known Appalachian Trail, which extends from Georgia to Maine.  The SHT as it is commonly called, winds through seven state parks covering some of the most rugged & scenic vistas Minnesota has to offer.  Particularly breath taking are the glimpses of majestic Lake Superior spanning for miles to the east beyond the horizon.

My name is Karen L Amundson & for 27 days I will call this wilderness my home.  I am an experienced backpacker.  I have 16 years backcountry wilderness experience.  My husband and I started backpacking before the lightweight trend in backpacking had emerged.  We planned our first trip on one of the most difficult, treacherous, and stunning trails in Yellowstone called the Sky Rim Trail.  Our packs weighed in at 40 pounds for me and 55 for Dan.  We got in way over our heads with the venture, stayed two nights at our first campsite, and limped out with our tails between our legs.

Despite the initial dismal and humbling failure, we were hooked!  We took every opportunity we were given to read, listen and learn everything there was to know about backpacking and wilderness adventure and safety.  We have been very blessed to experience the grandeur of Yellowstone, Rocky Mountain National Park, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, Yosemite, Glacier, Isle Royale, Utah’s Uinta mountains, and many other pristine places our government has set aside for its people to enjoy.

I have come to a place in my life where I want to share all I have learned over the past 16 years.  I want to make a difference in people’s lives and assist in any way I can to help others obtain the outdoor adventures of their dreams.  My first step is to share my next adventure with all of you.  Please join me as I start my journey on the Superior Hiking Trail.
